Description

Hike January 1st at Texas State Parks

Start 2026 with First Day Hikes at Seminole Canyon State Park!

Meet at the Park Headquarters building at 9:00 am on Thursday, January 1st for event welcome and hike sign-ups.

Choose your First Day Hike:

  • Windmill Trail Hike (Guided) - enjoy the short but scenic Windmill Trail with a park interpreter for a family and kid friendly guided nature hike.  This slow and easy hike will take approximately 30 minutes (1/3 of a mile) and is a great option for families with younger children.  Hikes will depart the Park Headquarters every 30 minutes, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until noon.
  • Canyon Rim - Short Loop (Unguided) - enjoy beautiful canyon views along the first section of the Canyon Rim Trail, culminating with amazing views above the confluence of Seminole and Presa Canyons.  This is a moderately challenging 3.3 mile hike, requiring hikers to travel over uneven and loose, rocky surfaces.  This trail travels along the canyon rim, with steep and dangerous drop-offs, and may not be appropriate for younger children.
  • Canyon Rim - Long Loop (Unguided) - enjoy beautiful canyon views along the entire length of the Canyon Rim Trail, culminating at the southern boundary of the park, with majestic views of Panther Cave and the Rio Grande.  Binoculars are strongly recommended for the best views across the Canyon into Panther Cave.  This is a challenging and moderately strenuous 7.5 mile hike, requiring hikers to travel over uneven and loose, rocky surfaces.  This trail travels along the canyon rim, with steep and dangerous drop-offs, and may not be appropriate for younger children.

Come back to the Park Headquarters after your hike to receive your official Texas State Parks First Day Hike sticker!

Pets are welcome, but must remain on leash and must be tolerant of other dogs/animals.

Park entrance fees apply for this event:  $4 per adult (13 and over), children 12 and under are free.  Pay ahead online or by phone at (512) 389-8900!
